In August 2024, my wife and I travelled to New York City with our dog for a weekend.  The city has an infinite amount of things to do - but this particular trip was all about seeing and experiencing Central Park.

We spent a full day walking through the park. It was a delightful and humbling experience. While it certainly wasn’t my first time in Central Park, it was the first time I really took the time to truly appreciate the greatest park in the world.

Central Park is densely packed with art, attractions, and places for city inhabitants to unwind and appreciate nature.  Walking through it is engaging and fun.  And it’s big - like, really big - in some spots you can’t even tell that you’re also in the middle of largest city in the country.  But, in most areas, the tall skyscrapers of New York are a distant yet visible juxtaposition that make the tranquility of the park even more apparent.

Central Park is a testament to restraint.  Every square foot of Manhattan is valuable, and yet the city planners were able to reserve this park for enjoyment by all people.  How easy and profitable would it have been to slice into this park to build one or two more city streets?  But instead, the city has honored the original park designers wish; Central Park belongs to New Yorkers wholly.

The great secret of Central Park is that it’s actually man-made.  To me, that is one of the most incredible parts about it.  The fields, pathways, wooded areas, and elevation changes were painstakingly designed to best serve park visitors.  A handful of roadways cut through the park, but they are sunken at a lower elevation to reduce their noise and visibility.

After arriving home from our weekend trip, I felt inspired to make this bandana. I wanted it to highlight and celebrate all of the things that make Central Park great.  My hope is that this design resonates with anyone who has visited the park and was humbled by it like I was.

All art was hand-drawn myself.  Screen printing was commissioned.  This product is 100% made in the USA.
